I blame Toddlers and Tiaras

Halloween is merely a month away and I can't help noticing a trend among little girl costumes.   They all look more mature than I would like.  I'm being generous here.

I do realize this is not a new trend.  It's probably that I've been looking for the "over 5T" costumes recently and noticed a lot of this and am shocked by the amount of fish net stockings, short skirts and mid drift baring ensembles that these costumes offer.  Add that to the bratty little poses:  hands on hips, head tilted to the side, mean girl face and  "oh yeah, that's right" stance, modeled on the package and it's enough to send me into cardiac arrest right there at Target.  Then again I do realize it's all about supply and demand - so perhaps I'm in the minority?  I certainly am not intending for this post to offend anyone but I am perhaps more conservative than others.

So, I'm thanking my lucky stars that my girls have chosen to be a unicorn and a peacock this year and I'll continue to hope their "animal loving" trend continues.  Or, I'll take a witch, a ghost, somebody from Star Wars (as long as it's not Princess Lea's golden bikini), monster, a robot, whatever!

Thoughts?  Am I the only one feeling the pain?

  4. Yeah...I'm kind of glad we live in Maine because even if Emma had one of those costumes, she would still be wearing it over several layers of sweatshirt/pant/coat :-)

  5. Totally agree with you!! It is awful and makes me sad. I don't have kids yet, but i'm afraid to because of things like this! BTW, I found your blog through a comment on letter 4 :)

  6. My fiance and I are terrified for our daughter to get older! I completely agree with you, I remember being really young and wanting to be an M&M for halloween! Luckily we are moving back to MN so sometimes it snows as early as halloween so we can just tell her to wear a snow suit :)

  7. I was just saying that the other day. My mother wouldn't have let me out of the house... No freaking way. I remember one year I was a dice, like literally wore o box with spots on it. What happened to creative costumes?

  8. At first I spotted these and I thought you were going to say they were cute! So when I read I was like "phew! She hates them too." What's worse, are the sexy poses and attitude faces full of makeup. It's gross.

  9. I totally agree. These costumes are definitely not age appropriate. I feel like kids these days are growing up too quick. I wouldn't even wear something with fish nets and short skirts. I'm glad your girls like the cute costumes!

  10. You are making me SO thankful that I have three boys :) I fear the day that we have a girl and have to navigate through all of this craziness!
    Yay for unicorns and peacocks!

  11. I agree. I am just happy the girls will be what I tell them I think will be cute again this year. Now, I am in the process of making a pattern and running to the fabric store...hoping my plan with work...more to come on my blog about what they will be this year!

  12. I also totally agree! It was a little surprising even in the 5T section this year - just blows me away! Can't let my 4 year old be a princess because they show to much skin! :(
She looks really cute in her Care Bear costume though!!

  13. Good Grief! I guess I haven't noticed how ridiculous girls costumes were since I have 3 boys and Mona is only 2. I don't know about supply and demand, what kind of parents would think those are appropriate?

  14. I completely agree with you! I wasn't much aware of the 'Pageant scene' until the case of JonBenet Ramsay became so public back in 1996. Since that time, and with the advent of the show Toddlers & Tiara's alot of media coverage has ushered in these new costumes and the attitude that "it's just dress up"...yeah well, I used to 'just dress up' in my grandmother's costume jewelry and high heels: at no time did you see midriff, hiney-cheek or the like and I had a ball without all that other stuff. Thank you for recognizing with your (PRECIOUS!) girls that they can be little girls for a good long while.
PS. I love your blog! Just getting started on my own and yours has a sweet family feel to it. Love it!
