"Everyone's bald underneath their hair" - Susan McHenry

This weekend, I had a little time to myself and I reflected on a few things, I thought more about what I really wanted to accomplish this year and change about myself.  Bad habits...we all have them, some bigger than others.  One habit that I have drags me down and I suppose the road to breaking this is to admit it.  Here goes:  At times I beat around the bush.  I say yes when I mean no, I am not as direct as I should be.  Why?  To save face?  To avoid embarassment, to make others happy?  What I'm starting to realize that in an effort to make others happy, I'm not always making myself happy and I end up feeling resentful, even bitter.  So, one of the major traits I'm working on this year, is to make myself more direct.  Say what I mean, do what I want.  I'm not saying that you have to be rude or neglectful in doing so but it's important to speak up for what you truly want in life.

"When we hesitate in being direct, we unknowingly slip something on, some added layer of protection that keeps us from feeling the world, and often that thin covering is the beginning of a loneliness which, if not put down, diminishes our chances of joy" - Mark Nepo

I look at my two children and see that they are direct.  They tell me what they want, when they want it.  At what point do we loose this quality?

  1. Excellent post! I agree, for me it is all about trying to be more intentional about what I need and what we need as a family before making others happy. I still have a lot of work to do on that front, and others might see it as being selfish, or being difficult, but I don't see it that way. Good luck! It is hard to be direct when you should be :-)
