Doily Heart Shirt Tutorial

Riley really wanted a special Valentine's Day shirt to where this upcoming Tuesday.  I, on the other hand, didn't really want to spend the extra money for a shirt that she'd where one day.  Instead, I started looking at some options to make my own shirt for the girls.  There are some fantastic tutorials out there for beautiful shirts, like this Ruffle Heart shirt.  We settled on a Doily shirt, like the ones featured in this month's Family Fun magazine

First, I grabbed a couple of shirts I found on clearance at Target for $1.98 each!  Be sure to check there, they had red, purple, white and we settled on pink.  Lay out your shirt and place a hardcover book inside and smooth the shirt over to prevent wrinkes.
Next, gather your supplies.  You'll need a couple of heart shaped doilies, a glue stick, fabric paint and either a foam brush (like the ones they use for stenciling) or a paintbrush, with is what I used.
Apply a thin layer of glue to the back of your doily.  Be careful - being a "doily" it's very delicate so I went through two or three before I mastered the art of the "gentle dab" of glue.  Place your doily wherever you want it on your shirt. You could use a couple doilies or have one on the back but we decided to place it right in the center of our shirt.
Now, place your fabric paint into a small bowl and you are ready to paint.  Gently dab the paint inside your doily lace until the entire heart is covered.
Let set for about two minutes and gently peel doily away from the t-shirt.  If you leave it on too long, it will dry to the t-shirt.
We also made Sydney one and experimented a bit by using two colors...
I think these would be fun party projects!  The possibilities are endless: multi colored hearts, different placement, etc!  It's a fun and easy way you can dress up a basic shirt this Valentine's Day.

Happy Day!

  2. I've wanted to do this since the darn magazine came to my house a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately, I don't think it's gonna happen. Yours turned out cute! You can link this one to the Valentine Craft linky if you'd like! Have a great Thursday, Jessica!
