Springtime and a new pair of shoes

Do you remember a special new pair of shoes?
Riley was so excited the other day.  She was thrilled because it was a "most special day".  She was wearing a brand, spankin' new pair of sneakers.  Her mood was so great she made me giggle.  Then, I remembered being in the 3rd grade and a special Spring week when I was able to sport a new outfit and spiffy new Spring jacket.  I felt like a million bucks.  It really affected my mood, my week and my attitude.  I felt different, unique....and proud.  I've been thinking about all those kids who don't have the luxury to get new Spring shoes or clothing, and how fortunate we are to be able to have the things we do. I'm not trying to be "preachy" but I really wanted to stop and think about that.  Riley and I talked about it that morning.  It's so important to teach our children gratitude.  I want my girls to feel special and proud and also to have that realization that they are luckier than so many other kids.
"It's not fair that some kids have to go without day after day, don't you think Mom?"
I know, way to kill the mood.  Still, she walked out the door, feeling lucky, special and grateful.
Every child deserves to feel like that.
