Retro Monday: The Halloween Aftermath

This past Saturday, our city celebrated Halloween with Trick or Treating after it was postponed because of Hurricane Sandy.  It was a strange year and didn't seen like "Halloween" on November 3rd but my girlies had a fun time and made the most of it.  It was a little lighter than past years but that was ok, they still managed to get PLENTY of candy.  So, I'm THAT MOM.  That Mom who prefers pretzels and apples over Snickers and Skittles.  Still, my girls most certainly enjoy their M and M's  and I've been known to throw back a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup every now and again.  This past weekend, we most certainly had our fill of sugar and the girls picked a few of their favs to save but both opted to participate in the local dentist office's Halloween Candy buy back.  The buy back is a time when kids can bring their candy back to the dentist where they trade it for new, sparkly and light up toothbrushes, toothpaste and they are paid for their candy by the pound.  Granted, they aren't getting rich off it but still, it's a great program.  From there, the dentist office sends the candy over to the military for care packages.

So I got to thinking about some of my very favorite candy from my youth and I am most certain it would make any dentist cringe.  My absolute fav?  Yards and yards of red licorice!  Sort of hard to chew but I was typically satisfied after I ate about a mile.  How lucky was I a few weeks ago when I came across it - I had to buy it (for this post of course!)

Next up: Nik-L-Nip:  Bottles of "juice" in wax.  I have vague memories of consuming these by the 6 pack (which I'm now just fully realizing how wrong that was).  Kids sitting on street corners with their Nips....hummm.....

A little history...Nik-L-Nips were created in the early 1900s. The name combines the original cost of a "Nickel" and the preferred method of opening the wax bottle which was to "Nip" off the top. 

Lastly, the 1930's Candy Buttons!  The little tiny colored pieces of sugar that you literally scraped off paper (and typically got to eat a little paper as well in a mad rush to consume.)  I may or may not have created my own strip of these in 7th grade to feed to a girl who harassed me on the bus.  That my friends, was sweet revenge.  She ate the whole sheet before saying they tasted old and proceeded to walk around with a green tongue for the rest of the day.  (No worries, it was non-toxic paint friends). 

Don't judge me.  I was a fragile young girl!
