Pickles are OK: It's Retro Monday!

Flipping back through my pile 'o magazines over the weekend!  I love looking at these, it is so fun to see what was popular way back when.  It's seriously my guilty pleasure!  I find it so interesting...this week I want to share some gems I found in the February 1935 Good Housekeeping...looks like the ladies back then had groundhog on their minds like we do around here!
Apparently stocking runs were a serious problem...and aren't we so lucky to not have to wear nylons every single day?  I can't even imagine...especially when I have to go rock climbing!
The articles in this issue included sweet love stories in honor of St Valentine and how to as usual, cook to the best of your ability to keep "your man" happy.  This article discussed the fact that if you budgeted correctly, and cooked from scratch you could live on an income of $18 bucks a week!  This actually included tips on letting your husband eat the bulk of the food, since "you don't really need that extra calories anyway." (direct quote!) and how women should always offer to feed their husbands from time to time after they have a long day at work.  It just cracked me up!  I can't even imagine trying to feed my hubby like a baby bird!
Still, it's astonishing that 78 years ago we were still talking about the same things!  The things that women were concerned about then are similar to what we are concerned about now!  Take this question from Miss D. K....

"Will you please tell me how I may reduce my hips, thighs and legs? They are much too fat for the rest of my body."
and
"Are pickles fattening or harmful in any way? If I ever see one, I go right to it.  Mother is afraid they will injure me."
Pickles!  Lucky for Miss D. W.  she doesn't have to confront a pink slime in her school cafeteria, loads of processed foods in the grocery store that contain Aspartame, High Fructose Corn Syrup, BHA and BHT, Sodium Nitrite, MSG, Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone and Potassium Bromate, just to name a few.

Eat a pickle every once and a while and enjoy!

Happy Retro Monday my friends!

  1. Oh goodness! Matt would love to hear about letting the husband eat the majority of the food... :-) Glad to hear pickles aren't dangerous...I can't believe you have all of these! When you are ready to part with some I would love to take a look! I used to go through all the old newspapers my Nana kept from before my mom was born. Interesting to see what the "news" of the day was!
