Why I love Snow Days and a Recipe!

We were thrilled to see about 2 inches of snow here on Christmas Day.  "Santa brought us snow!" Sydney shouted Christmas morning.  It was truly a special day.  Little did we know we would get two more storms on Christmas vacation!  The first brought a lot of snow....and normally I'm not a fan but after last year's light Winter (where we only had to use our snowplow one time) it was a welcome sight.  My girls were thrilled to get out and play in it!  Dad was not as happy....but we beat the 2011-2012 Snowblowing record already!
Both Sydney and Riley got right out in the snow.  But Sydney, doesn't love it as much...and came inside to warm up after about 20 minutes.  So, off with the boots, snowsuit, hat, etc.  Then back out again.  We spent two full Christmas vacation days doing just that.  If you walked by my house during these outings you would have heard, "Sydney, leave your mittens on when you are out in the snow", "Sydney, please put your boots back on" and my favorite "Sydney, please stop eating so much snow".  Seriously, every time I looked at Sydney she was eating snow.  Luckily my Mom's dog had not been in the backyard.
These days always are celebrated with a game and a cup of hot cocoa....so deliciously sweet just like my two special girls.
My Girls Favorite Hot Cocoa Recipe
2 tablespoons Organic Cane Sugar
4 teaspoons unsweetened Cocoa Powder
1 cup skim organic milk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
pinch of ground cinnamon

  1. Mix sugar, cocoa and 2 tablespoons cold milk in a mug until smooth. Heat the remaining milk in a small saucepan on the stovetop or in a 2-cup glass measure in the microwave until steaming hot but not boiling. Stir in the cocoa mixture and vanilla.
  2. To froth the hot chocolate, whirl a whisk in it by rubbing your hands back and forth. (Alternatively, pour the hot chocolate into a blender, cover with the lid and a kitchen towel and blend until frothy.) Pour it back into the mug and sprinkle with cinnamon

Do you have any fun snowday traditions?

  3. You know, I loved the snow at Christmas this year as well. But, after the below 0 temps we had following that snow, it isn't as much fun :-) Seeing the kids playing is wonderful though!
