Fairy Gardens

I talked last week about our greenhouse tour, which soon inspired us to make our very own fairy gardens!

Materials Needed:

  • Container: Think about the size of the garden you want to create
  • potting soil
  • small, easy and non toxic plants
  • gravel, stones, marbles
  • small figurines such as animals or fairies
  • ladders, tiny signs, anything that will make your fairy feel at home
Both my daughters had mentioned wanting to make their own gardens, so we had begun gathering different materials for their gardens in the beginning of Winter.  It's easy to collect bits and pieces of different items that would be perfect for a fairy garden.  Most children have tiny treasures, so it's a good organizational task to assign as well!
This is a simple and creative craft that anyone can do with their little ones.  All it takes is a container, some potting soil, a plant or two and then their imaginations run!  The girls picked a few plants at the greenhouse that included Baby's Tears, such a dainty little plant that I'm told is easy to care for an spreads naturally.
They used glass marbles for paths and borders and little animals they've collected through the years.  Sydney decided a little white kitty and a pink fairy would feel at home, while Riley used a swan and a purple fairy.
The thing I love most, is that this is an easy and beautiful living craft.  It helps them get through the dog days of Winter by caring for their sweet garden.  When Riley was scooping out her soil she exclaimed, "Ah...I love the smell of dirt and can't wait to plant flowers this Spring!"
To avoid over-watering they each have a misting bottle to use while caring for their gardens.  The gardens don't need direct sunlight and so far, they've been settling in quite nicely.
This Summer, they plan to work on fairy gardens throughout the backyard using only natural materials but for now, they are enjoying caring for their tiny indoor fairy gardens.

One last thing, the girls have been reading this fantastic book to help dream up their fairy gardens.  They received it for Christmas and I highly recommend it tp anyone who has a little dreamer.  It's full of creative ideas!

Linking up today over at Create With Joy!  Have a great day everyone!

  1. I love it! This is such a wonderful idea. Emma has been asking daily when the snow will melt so she can make her fairy house outside. I never thought to make one inside!
