Gardens!

I'm happy to report that our little garden seems to be off to a decent start.  After days of rain, followed by little burts of sun, I feel like it's going well so far.  This is the first year we've attempted to do Square Foot Gardening.  In years past, we did the Earthboxes, which we had pretty good sucess with but since the girls are getting older and more involved, I thought it was time to try to grow more than just tomatoes.  We have two simple boxes, which - I know, shouldn't be right next to one another but we still are able to get in and weed, and do what is needed.  We had a small space that has full sun so it seemed like a logical area for the garden to go.
I took a class at our local greenhouse on Square Foot Gardening and also got this book, which gives excellent tips on how to achieve the perfect little garden and how to use this gardening to get the maximum vegetables during your growing season.  I also followed the important soil suggestions - which seem to make a big difference.  I know the very first year I got great soil for our Earthboxes and had great success, last year I tried to get away with the cheap stuff and the plants certainly didn't fare as well.  It does make a difference.
We planted squash, zucchinni, onions, jalapeno peppers, sweet red cherry peppers, cucumbers, parsley, tomatoes, yellow beans, green beans and basil.  Although I noticed a bit of yellowing - the rain seemed to give them a burst of life again and they are looking greener and healthier - yay!
We also planted peas in containers - which we've had success with in past years.  The girls love picking fresh peas and green beans all Summer long.
How about you?  Do you have a garden?  What are you growing this year?  Any tips are welcome!

  1. My potted plants are all water logged and need more nitrogen. But, everything else seems to be faring quite well! And never underestimate the power of the tomato ;-) I have a long list of tomato products I need to can this year...which is probably why I plant so many tomato plants every year. Garden looks great! You will be overrun with fresh veggies in no time!

  2. Your garden is looking great! We planted late, so everything is small but doing well. Can't wait to see our first fruits! Right now we have basil and mint that we've been enjoying....there's something nice about herbs because you can use them right away :) As for the rest, we are waiting and crossing our fingers!!

  3. Your garden does look like it's off to a good start. Yay! Ours is doing ok so far, but we have had some issues with pests lately. Have to figure out an organic way to get rid of them!

  5. Your garden looks great! Our garden is struggling this year. The weeds have gotten ahead of me, and I am hoping they don't win!
