Corn!

How could it possibly already be Labor Day?  That seems simply crazy to me! Of course we love celebrating holidays around here and really, any excuse to have another Summer fiesta!  What types of food do you associate with Labor Day? We usually have a big barbecue complete with different types of salads and delicious grilled veggies. One mainstay for us is always corn! Luckily for us, we have an amazing farm up the street that opened a farmstand featuring just to that! I've never realized or given it much thought, but that there's several different varieties!  This past week, I managed to score a half dozen of each variety that this particular farm offers.  Although I don't know the names of each, I know one has all white kernels and the other has both white and yellow… Anyone?  I think the white and yellow is butter and sugar corn and the other is? Just sugar corn? I am not sure but I am certain my experts would be happy to challenge one another to a taste test to determine which they love more!
On the corn subject… How do you cook yours? We've attempted different methods over the years but when it comes down to it it seems that the most easily error-free corn for us is to simply boil it.  Although I have seen so many recipes regarding grilled corn that I often drool over my keyboard. (That is, if I actually had a keyboard…or a computer for that matter.).  Anyway! We have attempted to grow our corn in the past and we even got one of those little corn holders for the grill but we always end up with chard and chewy kernels.  We've also attempted to steam the corn in the husk on the grill and we have seem to have difficulty with that method as well because again… chard, black as coal kernels. If you have a failproof method I would love for you to share!
For now, we will stick with the easiest method for us at this point and enjoy our tasty ears while they're still plentiful. I know that soon it will no longer be available and we will be craving the freshest tastes of Summer!

Happy Labor Day!!!

  1. Boiled was always the norm for me. If I am eating alone, I have learned that microwaving is by far the easiest! So very simple. But that Mexican grilled corn....? Oh my.... Trust me, I am drooling over my keyboard enough for both of us! We both should try it!~

  2. My son grills the Mexican corn! It is delicious. Normally though, we like it boiled with nothing on it and you can taste the sunshine in it!!!!!

  3. I hope you had a great Labor Day, my friend!!! I grew up on boiled corn and it is absolutely delicious! I also like baking it in the husks......375 degrees for 20 minutes and you're good to go!!!
