Valentine's Day, Back In The Day!

Valentine's Day is next week!  This fun fact came to me from my daughter, who is very excited to hand out Valentine's this year to her classmates. She's in a class of 15 kids and one of only a few girls so she's pretty confident she'll score some Star Wars tattoos next week.  Are you ready? We're not huge on this holiday around here but I do like to take a look at what people used to give their sweeties "back in the day". If you're new here, you'll learn that I love a good retro magazine to keep me entertained.  Most recently, February 1958 issue of Good Housekeeping.  This one was full of ideas to help you celebrate.

Most of this issue was devoted to giving the ladies advice as to how to make their man's day as happy as they should.  Menu suggestions include making him a special hamburger....
Of course any lady who is getting ready for Valentine's Day should get on that WONDER DIET ASAP! Apparently, dieting was always something women were obsessed with talking about.
This "wonder diet" (aka starvation) includes grapefruit and black coffee....
There was also a special column specifically for the gentleman in your life outlining How To Kiss A Lady's Hand.  It is hysterical.
My favorite two parts are "NEVER KISS A LADIES HAND IF SHE'S UNDER 18!" and "DON'T JUST KISS THE PRETTY GIRL'S HANDS - UNATTRACTIVE WOMEN LIKE TO HAVE THEIR HANDS KISSED FROM TIME TO TIME AS WELL!"
Do you have any special plans on February 14th?

  1. Hi, We have plans for Saturday night. We are going to a candlelight ski event that has a band playing, food and fun. The ski will be fun at night in the candlelight. Maybe a little romantic too. ;-)
Sunday we will make a fun family meal and watch a movie. :-)

  2. I can vouch for the fact that unattractive ladies like their hand kissed from time to time, ha! ;) And diet fads, oh man, they are horrible. The things people used to do! Okay, the things people still do. It's crazy.
For our Valentine's day, I'm making potato soup. And that's about it. I don't make soup very often (and most often it will be nacho soup, which is all canned goods in the crockpot, so no real work!), so it will be special enough to count as something, but not special enough that it's a "oh it's fancy" - we aren't fancy people, we aren't really even romantic people, so it will be just fine for us!

  4. This is so funny! Love it! Well college girl will be home for her winter break and it's her birthday weekend so I'm sure we'll be doing some fun things. Hubby has a gig and we also have dinner reservations for her birthday in town.

  5. This was great! First of all, black coffee and grapefruit? Those two alone would have my tummy is such turmoil, I wouldn't be able to eat!
I did giggle at "If you make her look awkward-heaven help you"! What a hoot!

No special plans for us, but we may go out to dinner if the mood strikes us :)
