It Takes A Village!

I talked a bit about our Earth Day celebration at our school right before April Vacation. The day was wonderful, full of excitement and enthusiasm. The kids at the school LOVE being a part of it, taking responsibility to clean up the school grounds, getting their vegetable garden up and running, tending to their butterfly garden and working on recycled art projects. It's an amazing day. There's just something therapeutic about being outside in the sun, taking part of a community event like this. It's good for the soul. I can't explain the feeling of excitement and enthusiasm these kids have!

I helped out with the tye die event. Each grade has a color: red=kindergarten, blue=first grade, yellow=second grade, green = third grade, orange=fourth grade.

The kids wrap and band their white shirts they've labeled and brought from home. They get a kick out of putting the rubber bands on, it's always a mystery to see what your shirt will look like when you're done! A parent volunteer from each class takes the classes colored t-shirts home over April vacation to unband, wash, dry and fold. Then, they return the t-shirts to the teachers. The process works well and the kids love seeing the results.
In June, we come together as a school for our last big, community bash. The kids wear their t-shirts on field day and participate in different events. The field is full of excitement, fun and one giant rainbow of kids, coming together for one exciting and magical day! It takes a ton of teachers, coordinators and parent volunteers to make these events become a reality but we do it. We do it for our kids, for ourselves and for our futures. The smiles on their faces are contagious!

  1. Field day was always awesome in elementary school - though it would have been way better had we gotten tye-dye tshirts that we had done ourselves! Parents coming into school to help with special activities isn't something you think about much as a kid, but now looking back, they must have had a lot of patience to deal with so many excited children! ;)

  3. I love the Earth Day involvement of your school, it is great that the kids are learning great ways to help. I haven't heard of any other friends kids having a butterfly garden, that is great!
