Kid's Craft Recipes

Today, I decided to share a couple recipes that we go back to again and again.  They aren't to consume though - they are to PLAY with!

After Riley turned two, I realized we went through a ton of art, craft and activity supplies.  We always ask for these things when people are asking for birthday and Christmas ideas - because they are well loved, used and can get a little expensive.  I stated making some of our supplies and they came out just as good and much leass pricy!  Here are some of the ones we use again and again....

Finger Paint -
2 T. cornstarch
2T cool water
1 cup boiling water
food coloring (I use India Tree)
Mix the cool water and cornstarch.  Add the boiling water and stir until it thickens.  When it's cool, divide into small cups or muffin tins.  Add your color and mix.

Play Dough -
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 tsp cream of tarter
2 cups water with food coloring
2 T. oil
Mix all your ingredients together in a nonstick pan.  Cool over medium heat until it forms a hard ball, stirring constantly.  As it becomes half cooked, the dough will become more difficult to mix.  Keep stirring until all parts are hardened.  Knead to achieve a smooth consistancy.  Yes, play-doh is relatively inexpensive but this recipe will cost about thirty cents compared to  a few dollars.  It's also a fun party idea and the guests can make their own and take it home after.

Cinnamon Modeling Dough
This is a great one to make in the Fall and for holiday gifts - just don't let the kiddos eat it!
3/4 applesauce
1 C cinnamon
1 T. cloves
1 T. nutmeg
2 T. glue
Mix thoroughly and shape into desired shapes.  We made this over school vacation and did little bird shapes.  After you have the shape you want, lay on a cookie sheet and leave in oven at 200 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

I've found with making changes to our cleaning products, art supplies and home beauty remedies, we are able to save more money.  For those of you who came to visit for a recipe, check out Bakeaholic Mama....she blogged about the most delicious salad, Asparagus Chickpea Salad with a Lemon Honey Vinaigrette (with some heat!)  We had it last night and it was a winner!

Have a great weekend!
