Pencil Jars

These early Fall days have been spent with my sweet girls who are settling into their new school routines quite nicely.  The days are busy but weekends have been wonderful.  Of course, part of the weekend means getting ready for a new week and of course, part of that means organizing!    We spent some time this past weekend cleaning drawers and closets, getting clothes put away and getting supplies ready. We have so many pens, pencils and markers! The girls decided to make some more Pencil Jars to organize all their loot.  We made those Pom-Pom pencil jars last week. This week we opted for handpainted ones! These simple and pretty jars remind me of the vintage collectible sour cream jars that I saw featured in Martha Stewart last year. They are very easy and affordable!

Materials Needed
  • Glass jar (mason jars work well but we used recycled pickle and jam jars that worked just as well)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Pencil
Directions:
  1. Prepare your surface by laying down newspaper to protect your area
  2. On a clean, dry jar start by simply dabbing your pencil’s eraser in the yellow paint
  3. Press gently and evenly to get the circle imprint on your glass jar
  4. Repeat in a circle until you’ve achieved your sunflower’s petals
  5. Continue to make flowers until your jar is full
  6. Allow to dry for one hour to avoid smudging
  7. Clean your pencil’s eraser with a wet cloth and dry
  8. Carefully apply one dot of brown and wiggle the eraser a bit to fill in the flower’s center
  9. Repeat on the remaining flowers until your desired sunflower look is achieved
  10. Allow to dry 2-4 hours
  11. Present to Mom or yourself on Mother’s Day with fresh flowers!
Thank you Lemon Tree Dwelling (again) for the inspiration!
